The short answer
SEO, GEO and AEO describe overlapping goals. Start with accessible pages, accurate business facts and useful answers, then measure search performance and AI observations separately.
Three terms for overlapping work
SEO means search engine optimization: improving how a site can be found and used through search. GEO means generative engine optimization: improving the information and evidence available when AI systems generate answers. AEO, or answer engine optimization, is commonly used for work aimed at direct answers. These labels overlap and are not standardized service specifications.
For a small business, the useful question is what work will change. A provider who uses all three labels still needs to explain which pages will be improved, which facts need approval and how progress will be measured.
| Focus | Example task | Evidence to review |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Make an important service page discoverable and indexable. | Response, canonical, internal links and search performance. |
| GEO | Check how selected AI answers describe that service. | Exact questions, saved answers, source links and factual checks. |
| AEO | Make the answer to a buying question clear and supported. | The actual page section and whether it answers the intended question. |
Start with the shared foundations
Google's AI search guidance says its existing SEO foundations remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require a special AI text file or a special schema type. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.
Apply that boundary to your project. Verify crawl access and initial HTML, describe services accurately, connect relevant pages and make the contact journey usable. If the pricing page contradicts the service page, resolve the contradiction before adding another optimization label.
An optional llms.txt or agents.md can summarize public information for tools that choose to read it. Keep it synchronized with the website. It should not become a second place with different prices or a claim that all AI systems will use it.
One example, three kinds of evidence
Consider a fictional plumbing company whose service page lists emergency repairs but never states its service area. The SEO task might include making the page discoverable and improving its title. The content task is to add the genuine coverage and contact procedure. The GEO measurement task is to observe selected questions about emergency plumbing in that area.
After publication, verify the page change first. Then check indexing through the appropriate search tools and repeat the recorded AI questions. A technically successful deployment does not prove that the company gained recommendations or customers. Those outcomes need their own evidence.
This example describes a workflow. It is not a customer case study or a claim about results for a real plumbing business.
Compare the work before comparing the label
Ask a potential provider for the URLs included, the question set, the markets and languages, the factual review process, implementation ownership and the reporting method. Separate one-time fixes from recurring observations. Check what happens when a new service or price changes.
A software product may help your team collect evidence. A managed service may supply writing, development and review. Either can be a good fit when responsibilities are clear. Use the tools and services comparison to frame the purchase, and the audit outline to define a first piece of work.
A first-week plan for a service business
- Choose one valuable service and the customers it serves.
- Check the service, pricing and contact pages for missing or conflicting information.
- Select a small set of unbranded buying questions and separate branded accuracy checks.
- Record a baseline using the prompt tracker.
- Fix one confirmed information gap, record the publication date and repeat the relevant checks.
Expand when the next page has a distinct purpose and enough verified information to answer it. A page-count target should not substitute for a useful answer.
Questions & answers
Do I need separate websites for SEO and GEO?
No. Use one authoritative website with accessible pages and consistent facts. Different measurement tasks do not require conflicting versions of your business information.
Does a longer article perform better in AI search?
Length alone does not establish usefulness or eligibility. Answer the intended question completely and support factual claims without adding repetitive text.
